Congratulations Katie Schwabedissen, Certified Employee of the Month for December. Katie teaches language arts and Social Studies at O’Leary Middle School
Katie is a Twin Falls native who enjoys gardening and reading when she is not at work. Someday she would like to learn to speak Spanish fluently. She has always wanted to be a teacher. She loves working with kids and seeing them grow and change throughout the year. Her inspiration is when she sees her children being successful. Her best day on the job is when students from older grades (particularly graduating seniors) return to visit. She would like to be remembered as helpful to her students. A word that best describes her is caring.
Principal Note:
Ms. Schwabedissen is the manifestation of a master teacher. She cares deeply for her students and her curriculum. The last two years she has asked to have her 3 sections of Language Arts filled with the students that are struggling the most. She makes sure that there are accommodations that are appropriate for them but is still holding them to the same standards as the other teachers at the school. Her students showed great growth last year and I expect that this year’s students will be just as successful.

Jessica is originally from right here in Twin Falls, Idaho. She chose this career to inspire others to rise above their struggles. The best days on the job are family nights! She loves planning, organizing, and working with students and staff to invite families to learn together. She is best described as action-oriented and draws inspiration from her peers, students, and family. Her favorite hobby outside work is following her three daughters on their many softball adventures. Most people don’t know Jessica used to drive an NHRA dragster at 160 mph in 8 seconds! Her biggest pet peeve is not refilling the toilet paper roll. And she would love to go on an exotic vacation to somewhere warm. Jessica wants to be remembered as a partner in brainstorming, problem-solving, learning, and growing together.

What does the supplemental levy pay for?
TFSD is a people organization. Roughly 80 percent of the budget goes towards staffing which provides programs and support to students. We employ roughly 1,500 people every year and the supplemental levy is one way that we are able to ensure we have enough people to effectively maintain and operate our schools.
The supplemental levy supports the District’s efforts to maintain a safe learning environment. The District uses this levy to provide school resource officers at the secondary schools, armed security guards at the elementary level, and behavior support personnel at all levels.
This supplemental levy would provide funding for roughly 40 classified staff members (teaching aides, cooks, secretaries, and custodians), 20 certified staff members (teachers, instructional coaches, and counselors), and 4 administrators (principals, vice principals, and activities directors).

It seems like the TFSD pursues a levy all the time. Why is the district pursuing additional funds?
Supplemental levies only last for a maximum of two years. This means that to continue the funding the district must pursue a new levy every two years as well. This proposed levy is a slight increase due to increased costs to the District, the end of federal COVID Relief funds, and the loss of state lottery funds historically used to pay for maintenance staff.
